Third-Year Job: Portfolio Evidence Guide

SMU's 9 June 2026 ATxSummit recap used a sharp phrase for the current graduate market: the entry-level job is becoming a "third-year job". The point is not that students must already be experts. It is that employers are asking fresh graduates to show judgement, resilience, teamwork, and practical evidence earlier than before.

Workforce Singapore's fresh graduate guide makes the same pressure visible from another angle. It notes that the first-job search can feel harder, hiring processes can take longer, and practical skills increasingly matter alongside qualifications.

What students should start collecting

Students do not need a polished portfolio site on day one. They need evidence that can survive an interview question.

1. The assignment brief or project problem.

4. Can I describe how I checked the result?
5. Can I remove private data before sharing the work?
6. Can I connect the project to a real role or skill?

If any answer is weak, the next step is not more decoration. The next step is clearer documentation.
